2.6 Cystic Lesions

The evaluation of cystic masses is currently the principle application of CEUS in renal pathology. A review of current literature shows the methodology is accepted as the primary imaging technique for the characterization of cystic lesions, with diagnostic accuracy comparable to that of MSCT [32, 33]; furthermore, the possibility of using CEUS within the Bosniak classification system is now also widely accepted as an alternative to using MSCT [1, 32–34].

A quick review reminds us that Bosniak classification distinguishes five categories, increasing in the degree of possibility of malignancy in the masses identified: Type I and II are characterized by simple cystic formations without calcification and thickening parietal nodules; they may have thin septa without noticeable post-contrast enhancement (Fig. 2.18).
